MARKHAM RECEIVES PLATINUM-LEVEL WCCD ISO 37120 CERTIFICATION FOR SEVENTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR
MARKHAM, ON – Tuesday, December 23, 2025 – Last week, The City of
Markham received ISO 37120 Platinum-level certification from the World
Council on City Data (WCCD) for the seventh consecutive year.
The certification underscores
Markham's position as a global and Canadian leader in data-driven
decision-making. Markham became a member of the WCCD in 2019 and is now part of
a worldwide network comprising more than 125 cities across 40 different countries. The
certification was presented during Council Session, where Dr. Patricia
McCarney, the President and CEO of the WCCD, personally presented the
certificate to Mayor Frank Scarpitti.
“Receiving Platinum-level certification for the seventh consecutive year solidifies Markham’s leadership among more than 125 cities worldwide committed to data-driven governance,” said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “Being part of this global network enables us to showcase our high standards for transparency, innovation, and sustainable city-building.”

City of Markham has made significant strides in collecting and leveraging data
to enhance the services we provide and make meaningful investments that improve
quality of life,” said Markham CAO Andy Taylor. “The data enables us to track
progress over time, benchmark against leading global cities, and make informed
decisions that directly support the City’s Strategic Plan, Building Markham’s
Future Together.”

The Platinum certification of Markham underscores the City’s transparency, accountability, and dedication to sustainable development. It serves as recognition for the City’s ongoing endeavors to foster a vibrant and inclusive community for its residents and an enhanced quality of life.

Established in Canada in 2014, the World Council on City Data (WCCD) is committed to helping cities and communities of all sizes globally embrace ISO standardized, independently verified, and globally comparable city data. The WCCD team of professionals spearheaded the development and implementation of three international standards on city data, which have been published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in Geneva. These standards, referred to as the WCCD ISO 37120 Series on City Data, encompass ISO 37120 (Indicators for Sustainable Cities), ISO 37122 (Indicators for Smart Cities), and ISO 37123 (Indicators for Resilient Cities).
